‘Lower Your Expectations’ had a relaxed feel on a quiet Wednesday night. Rachael’s entertaining stories kept the audience enthralled and brought muted but regular laughs from the shy audience. Rachael performed with confidence and excellent mic technique, appearing a seasoned performer on stage.
Rachael interlinked her stories seamlessly and maintained her friendly demeanour throughout. This considered, the show’s pacing lends itself more to a fringe-style storytelling piece than a classic stand-up comedy show. The consistent relatively low-energy pace of the show meant some of the more emotion-based elements did not meaningfully connect with the audience.
While Rachael’s experiences are unique, the show’s core theme of developing and maintaining a sense of self was inherently relatable and her stories of family particular highlights. ‘Lower Your Expectations’ was not a standard stand-up comedy show and would appeal more to those searching for ‘one of a kind’ stories.
