‘War of the Words’ has a sound premise and a diligent comedian behind it who is willing to do the research to back it up. Many of Matt’s early observations about the English language were interesting and received decent laughs. However, as the show progressed it became more of a commentary piece than stand-up.
This show has interesting points to make, some with an overtly political tone and others that are a bit sillier. Where Matt appears to fault is in how much effort he takes to get to the crux of an issue or a potential punch line. There is humour to be drawn from each of the concepts he discusses but the show is constructed in such a way that these laughs do not flow naturally.
Matt appears an earnest performer who has a genuine passion for his subject matter. Those enthusiastic about linguistics or similar may get more out of this show.
