Hug achieved: x1
“If you want to see a show with three good acts…you couldn’t ask for a better pedigree at this stage of our careers”, says David Rose as we discuss the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show ‘Stand Up Comedy’, a split show featuring, Zack Dyer, Izzy Ali and himself. “Two (RAW Comedy) national finalists” and “a state finalist”, David continues frankly.
David is full of praise when discussing his co-stars/co-conspirators. Zack is one of the “three people that I’ve seen that I knew immediately were going to be great” and Izzy “is one of the most naturally funny people… he’s one of those frustrating people, the things he says just in real life, are funnier than the things I write”!
Without Zack or Izzy to ask about their thoughts on David, I asked him myself. David started his comedy career in fine form… in year three at primary school, doing a “Dave Allen bit”. Since this illustrious start, David gigs extensively around Melbourne, continues to help run a comedy room (The Flying Duck, 67 Bendigo Street, Prahan) and has even performed in Germany. David performed around 20 gigs in Berlin, some of those in German, which he speaks fluently. He has also written for Cracked.com. “It’s a weird one” referring to the extremely large readership, “once the numbers get that big, they’re just numbers on a screen”, the most important numbers to David are the comments.
A consistent theme throughout our chat is David’s support for other comedians, often preferring to speak of their talents instead of his own, including “the nicest guy ever” Wil Anderson. He refers to his immediate appreciation of the comedy of Corey White, “Australia’s Bill Hicks” and Naomi Higgins. David tells me about a gig where he and Naomi opened for Tommy Little and Nazeem Hussain; “Naomi got off stage… Tommy Little said ‘God, Naomi’s amazing’… that was her first gig”. David also recommends other MICF shows to see, he advises me to check out the ‘Deadly Funny National Final & Showcase’ on 8 April and “if I can plug one other show, go see Alice Fraser… she’s one of the most consistently amazing acts I’ve seen”.
Why should you see ‘Stand Up Comedy’ featuring David Rose, Zack Dyer and Izzy Ali? “You know what you’re getting…honestly, that is why we called it that… it was a considered decision”. David jests that with a show titled “The Lobster Complex” an audience would not know what it was about, but it is clear with their chosen title; “some people just want to see stand-up”.
