As a big fan of The Little Dum Dum Club (with Tommy Dassalo and Karl Chandler), I was keen to see Dilruk Jayasinha in the flesh. For those who have not listened to the podcast (subscribe now and have a listen), Dilruk’s weight has featured a lot in it, and also makes appearances in his show ‘Sri Wanka’. Dilruk appeared to speak genuinely about his weight, and the audience was laughing with him and not at, which is important. If you had to come out every night, and be laughed at, well – that’s not a great feeling. Dilruk is not a “disgusting fat fuck” (as he is so labelled on the podcast) and needs to believe more in his ability. The night we saw Dilruk, he had a great night with lots of laughs but it took time for him to accept that we were enjoying the show.
On a completely separate note, Dilruk used a quality narrative technique well – revealing parts of a story gradually throughout a set (ie. the story that never finishes). It’s a tried and tested technique for keeping the audience entertained which was executed well. Worth noting the ending to Dilruk’s show knocked my socks off. What an absurd world we live in.
Sadly, no hug with Dilruk but the top bloke was happy to shake my hand. Next time buddy, next time.
