‘Paradise!’ was silly and occasionally a little dark but also full of entertainment and laughs. Barney and Matt took the audience on a train ride to Paradise and introduced a number of weird and wonderful characters along the way. The train-ride theme loosely connected the show and provided a base from which to launch the absurdity.
The two performers appeared to make each other laugh as much as they did the audience, which if you don’t mind performers breaking character, added to the fun of the evening. Barney and Matt had good chemistry on stage and were enjoyable to watch. They brought enthusiasm to their characters, each of which required a high level of energy to be successful.
The show was at its best when it stuck to the script. Aside from minor moments of banter, the majority of the adlib felt stilted and interrupted the flow of the show. ‘Paradise!’ also gets a bit messy from time to time, figuratively and literally – so fair warning!
‘Paradise!’ has a strong selling point in that it is memorable. From the extremely talented performer who opened and closed the show with a killer voice, to the guest performer in the finale and all the absurd characters in between, this show stays with you for better or worse.
