After seeing Matt’s 2017 MICF show ‘Songs in the Key of Awesomesauce’, I had high hopes for his 2018 effort. Matt has grown in confidence and has added a few new strings to his metaphorical guitar, including some improvisation skills, but for the most part ‘For Science!’ felt very similar both in content and format to his previous show. As with Hugging Comedians’ 2017 experience with the show (read it here), it features memorable songs but lacked structure and direction.
A brief set from Jake Budge to open up the night was a nice surprise. Jake warmed up the audience well with some personal material that hit some unexpected notes. While I have reservations about warm-up sets with no link to the show, he received a really positive response and was a welcome addition to the night.
If you’ve never seen Matt perform before and missed his 2017 MICF effort, ‘For Science!’ offers a lot of good things, including cleverly written songs performed with a friendly face and enthusiasm. Matt appears an intelligent comic who is able to think laterally, and create innovative musical comedy.
Check out ‘For Science!’ from 4 to 9 April 2018. For more information and to book tickets, click here.
