Despite being the last show of Emily’s full MICF run of 21 shows, she brought great energy to her performance. The audience immediately responded well to this enthusiasm, which created a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for the show.
Emily owns her material with confidence, covering a range of ideas through the lens of getting over a breakup. She captured her experiences well and left the audience feeling supported. Emily’s set felt empowering without becoming preachy. Similarly, she was self-deprecating at times but owned it, with the audience responding well to her honesty and occasional silliness!
Not all of the material landed but laughs were constant throughout the night. Even when a joke did not resonate as expected, Emily’s confidence shone through and she used her energy to maintain the positive momentum of the show.
When I met with Emily before the festival began (read the interview here), she spoke of creating a “bubble of happiness” in her show. Even on a looser Saturday night, it felt like Emily was focussed on creating an entertaining show and captured the essence of a supportive friend who wants you to be the best you can be!
With lots of laughs and dance moves I will not forget, ‘Not Your Ex’ proved to be a really fun night out!
Emily Tresidder has finished her MICF run but you can catch her in Sydney at the Enmore Theatre from 27 to 30 April 2017. For more information and to book tickets, click here!
