David is an engaging performer and holds his own during this one-man sketch show. He has wild and energetic facial expressions that are difficult to look away from. Even in sketches with a simple premise, David drew every eye of the audience.
The show is a little silly but this is part of the fun. Behind the props and the simple costumes is writing that understands the audience and is occasionally more complex than it first appears. Even though this was a preview show (and featured the occasional technical hiccough), it is obvious that it had been tested and thought out, particularly when it came to accurately predicting possible audience reactions.
While there are elements of audience participation, these are entirely in good faith and do not unjustly target anyone. David’s experience in improvisations has put him in good stead for these interactions; he appears able to handle whatever the audience may throw at him (not literally, please do not throw things at David).
True to other reviews, David has the flavour of a developing Rowan Atkinson (think early years of ‘LIVE!’). Despite not being at that level of legendary status (yet), David demonstrated in ‘Sketch Me Like One of Your French Girls’ that he has both the writing and performance ability to reach greater heights.
