Hayley Tantau has put together an engaging 2016 Melbourne Fringe Festival show in ‘Cindy Salmon’s Empowerment Hour’! Hayley, or as she is known during the performance ‘Cindy Salmon’, delivers a very strong character performance which she carries out right to the end. The show, directed by Simon McCulloch, progresses and changes when it needs to, preventing the format becoming stale or stagnating.
The Empowerment Hour is filled to the brim with audio cues (including recurring jokes), which is a difficult challenge and requires excellent timing from both the audio technician and performer. That said, they are executed well and in the one or two moments where the timing was not perfect, Hayley rebounded with quick ad-libs and kept the performance flowing.
Assertive and entertaining, Hayley draws in the crowd. Her portrayal of Cindy Salmon is convincing and a little intoxicating as she riles up the audience and gets them onside with gusto! The nature of Cindy Salmon’s personality also makes for some very entertaining audience banter, particularly for anyone brave enough to get involved.
‘Cindy Salmon’s Empowerment Hour’ is a joy to watch. It covers necessary topics and sparks the conversations that need to be had in a humorous, and at times, meaningful way.
